About This Project

Our registered nurse prescriber Claire is trained, skilled and experienced to carry out minor cosmetic surgical procedures.  Prior to treatment you would attend a consultation, the lesion will be assessed, and treatment options discussed.  A medical assessment is carried out, risks and benefits of the procedure will be discussed. Discussion around how to prepare for the procedure, what to expect during the procedure and aftercare, you will be given an opportunity to ask questions.

All patients undergoing treatments are advised to watch the video to prepare for surgery.

On the day of the procedure, you will be made to feel welcome and relaxed. You will be given an opportunity to ask any questions you may have and review the surgical procedure prior to signing the consent form.  You will be given a follow-up appointment where sutures will be removed.

All biopsies will be sent to histology (apart from a couple of procedures).

Post procedure a letter will be sent to your G.P advising them of the procedure and outcome.

Abscess drainage

An abscess is a collection of pus caused by bacterial infection which can occur anywhere on the body.  Some abscesses may drain naturally and do not require further treatment.  Antibiotics in isolation generally do not cure an abscess.  Incision and drainage under a local anaesthetic is a safe and effective treatment for abscesses. A gauze wick is placed in the hole, a follow-up appointment will be made to remove the wick.

Procedure

A local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area, a small cut is made, and the pus is encouraged to drain out.

A cyst is a round, dome-shaped lump, they are fluid filled lumps under the skin that range in size.  Epidermal cysts are the most common type of cysts and are found on the face, neck, chest, shoulders or skin around the genitals.   Young and middle-aged adults are predominantly affected especially those with acne.

Procedure

A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, a small cut is made along the cyst. The cyst is extracted, and the incision is stitched closed.

Lipoma removal

Lipomas are benign soft fatty slow growing lumps that grow under the skin, they move slightly when pressed. Patients can feel self-conscious about their appearance and patients would like them removed as a result.  Larger lipomas can become tender due to pressure on neighbouring nerves or overlying skin stretching.

Lipomas can occur on any part of the body where there is a fat layer.  They are mostly found on.

  • Extremities
  • Trunks
  • Backs
  • Abdomen
  • Forehead

Procedure

A surgical incision is made under a local anaesthetic.  The lipoma is extracted, and the incision is sutured to close the skin.  Some lipomas may require a slightly larger incision, all surgical procedures carry 100% chance of scars.

Skin Tags

Skin tags are small benign growths on the outside of the skin, they can vary in size and colour and do not have any malignant potential. Reason for removal is usually for cosmetic reasons or if they catch on clothes.

Superfluous cells grow on the top layers of the skin causing skin tags.  It is more common in people who have folds in their skin, where the skin rubs against itself.  Both men and women can get skin tags and is most common in older people with type 2 diabetes.

Procedure

Skin tags are snipped and excised under a local anaesthetic.  Sutures are not usually required, however, there may be some instances where the skin tag has a large base.

Seborrheic Keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis is a common benign skin growth which generally occur gradually as a person gets older (usually starts in the 50’s).  It is caused by the abnormal build up of keratocytes (cells) predominantly in people with fair skin colour but can be skin in darker skin. Seborrheic keratosis usually runs in families, and if you have had one seborrheic keratosis you risk developing more.  It is not contagious and are not premalignant.  Hormonal changes can also cause seborrheic keratosis such as pregnancy and estrogen replacement therapy.

They are generally round or oval, scaly, raised, black, brown or light tanned in colour and waxy in appearance.  They are often found on the face, neck, chest or back and vary in size.

Seborrheic keratosis is removed and sent to histology to rule out anything more sinister.  It is also removed for cosmetic purposes and if it is catching on clothing which in turn causes irritation.

Procedure

Under a local anaesthetic a thin superficial layer of skin is shaved off with a scalpel to remove the lesion.  A biopsy will be sent to histology.
